Ã¢â¬Å"Free Speech on CampusÃ¢â¬ , by Nat Hentoff provides an overview of the first amendment from one school to another. Throughout the story Hentoff uses examples such as fliers, professors, guest speakers, and many other devices to convey his point. Hentoff states, Ã¢â¬Å"how are they going to learn to identify and cope with themÃ¢â¬ , this dealing with the protection of students from bad ideas. Hentoff feels that the problems with free speech expand beyond this one issue and also has to do with freedom of inquiry, action, and religion on campus as well. Even thought there are many attempts to protect students from free speech on campus, organizations are wrong for doing so. These attempts to protect are taking away our first, and most important right freedom of speech. The first amendment of the constitution states, Ã¢â¬Å"Congress must not interfere with freedom of religion, speech or press, assembly, and petitionÃ¢â¬ (Bailey and Kennedy VX). This amendment is not limited to just whites or blacks; as long as a person holds residency in the United States, they have the rights stated in the first amendment. To take away this right is to take away our self expression, this expression is on of the many reasons people fled to the United States. However this expression is not limited to just free speech. This expression allows Jews to be Jews, openly, Muslims to be Muslims, openly, and so on. Yet, there are people in this country who abuse this right. Although freedom of speech and other rights we have due to the first amendment should not be harmed, there are people and groups in out country who abuse these rights. For example the Klu Klux Klan (KKK), this group began to gain popularity in the 1860Ã¢â¬â¢s. If it was not for the first amendment groups like the KKK would not exist. Investigating into the factors that affect acceleration Essay I have chosen to investigate the affect changing the amount of force applied to an object has on acceleration. Hypothesis I predict that as the amount of force applied to the trolley increases, the acceleration will increase in direct proportion. I believe this will happen because according to Newtons Second Law, increasing the force increases the acceleration, provided the mass stays the same. Therefore, acceleration is directly proportional to the force applied. Fair Test Without fair testing the experiment would be useless because the information gathered would not be accurate or reliable. Here are the things we did to ensure our experiment was a fair test: Ã The distance travelled; the mass and weight of the trolley shall remain constant, as these are not the factors we will be changing. Ã The only thing we will change will be the force applied to the trolley. No force will be applied to the trolley when it is at the top of the runway, instead we will just let go of it and let gravity be the force. Ã When putting the trolley at the top of the runway we will make sure that the back wheels of the trolley are touching the ticker timer this way each experiment will start in the same place. We will test the trolley beforehand to ensure all wheels were working, because if one or more wheels are not working this could affect the speed/acceleration of the trolley. Safety Precautions As with all experiment, safety is crucial. Every experiment possesses some form of danger and through these guidelines I hope the risk of danger will be minimised: Ã Make sure the trolley is stopped before it reaches the end of the runway where the pulley is to prevent damage to trolley, runway or pulley. Make sure that when catching the trolley at the opposite end of the runway you are not in front of it before it reaches a halt as it could cause an injury Ticker Timer For this experiment we shall use a ticker-timer to record our results. A ticker-timer is a way of analysing the motion of objects. As the trolley moves, it drags the tape through the ticker timer, thus leaving a trail of dots, which were printed there by a vibrating metal bar running on an electric current, which hits a piece of paper fifty times a second. The analysis of a ticker tape will reveal if the object is moving with constant velocity or accelerating. This is how we hope to record the acceleration of our trolley. To get the results from the ticker timer tape, you need to divide the tape into five dot strips, this is because each five dots is equal to 0. 1 seconds. Preliminary Work Before the actual experiment took place, we decided to do some preliminary work. There was a chance that something could go wrong, for example, the trolley could hit the side of the runway, or the weights could fall off or the ticker timer would not be entirely accurate. So we gave the experiment a test run to make sure everything worked according to plan. Then we placed the runway on a raised surface approx. a metre above the floor. Once this had been done, we prepared the ticker timer at the top of the runway. We did this by cutting ticker timer tape to 85 cm (We chose this length because the tape will be out of the ticker timer before the weights hit the floor). Next, we plugged the wires into the ticker timer in their rightful places and threaded the ticker-timer tape through the ticker timer. Then we placed the trolley at the top of the runway. We then stuck the ticker timer tape to the back of the trolley with tape. Next, we threaded a piece of string through the trolley and attached it to the pulley at the opposite end of the runway. To the end of this string we added different weights according to which experiment we were on. We started with 100g that is equal to 1 Newton in force. Then, on the count of three we simultaneously turned on switched on the mains, which activated the ticker timer and let go of the trolley, which caused it to roll down the runway. It rolled down the runway because the force of gravity acting on the weights pulled it. Once the ticker timer tape was out of the ticker timer we stopped the trolley to prevent it from hitting the pulley at the bottom end. We then switched off the ticker timer. We then labelled the piece of ticker timer tape to refer to when writing down our results. We then repeated this process for 200g, 300g, 400g, 500g, 600g, 700g, 800g, 900g and 1000g. Results Force = 1N Acceleration = (final speed start speed). Unfortunately, my graph has not turned out how I expected. The results show me that in my experiment the acceleration was not directly proportional to the force applied, which (in relation to my scientific research) should not be possible. The graph should be a straight diagonal line (as seen in my predicted graph) however mine was very varied, although it did follow a positive correlation, so we were on the right lines. Evaluation My results were not very accurate at all. I feel this is because there were a lot of factors that made it an unfair test despite my efforts to keep it fair. This could also be the reason why there are various anomalous results (it might be possible that all the results are anomalous! ) The factors that would have altered my results include: * Friction. The surface of the ramp caused friction because any type of grip on the surface could slow the trolley down. Also, the surface of the wheels could slow down the trolley because this is the affect of any type of traction provided by wheels. There is little we can do to create a friction-less workspace, but to keep it a fair test, we will keep the factors altering friction constant. Ã Air-resistance. As the trolley moves through the air the trolley pushes on the air and the air pushes back on the trolley making it speed up less (this is called action and reaction). Again, there is not much we can do about this, but if we were to do this experiment again we would keep the aerodynamics of the trolley constant. * Slight curve in runway. This makes a slightly bigger force act on the trolley as it goes downhill therefore it has a greater speed. Next time, we could ensure that the runway is completely flat to prevent unfair alterations to results. Ã The ticker timer would alter the result as well. Consider the fact that in every second the tape gets hit fifty times this must have had some affect on the results. Unfortunately I dont think we could change this were we to do the experiment again because with the equipment available to us there is nothing more accurate. Given more time, I would have liked to repeat each experiment up to five times, to ensure the results were fair -and to prevent the amount of anomalous results. Also, if I were to do it again, I feel that we could extend the experiment. Originally the aim was to find out the factors which affected acceleration. During this experiment we only altered the force and nothing else, it would be worthwhile to alter other things such as the mass of the trolley, the distance, the weight etc. It would be interesting to see if we could prove Newtons Second Law through other experiments using different trolleys. (His law states that acceleration is directly proportional to the force applied). For example, we have proved (to the best of our ability) that through using the trolley that we did Newtons Second Law does not work, but would it work for other trolleys?

Diabetes Mellitus Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Diabetes is a chronic, genetically determined, debilitating disease that affects every organ system. There are two major types of diabetes: Type I and Type II. Type I or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), is caused by the autoimmune destruction of the insulin producing cells of the pancreas and is usually, but not always diagnosed in childhood. People with type I diabetes must take insulin shots in order to survive. Type II diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), are usually diagnosed in adulthood. They produce insulin, but their bodies do not use it effectively or properly. While many modern diseases plague society, diabetes has been known for many centuries (Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 1-3). Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Type I diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type I diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use sugar. Sugar is the basic fuel for the cells in the body, and insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When sugar builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems: cells may be starved for energy, and over time, high blood sugar levels may hurt your eyes, kidneys, nerves, or heart. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Type II diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type II diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use sugar. Type II diabetes accounts for 90 to 95% of diabetes. Type II diabetes is nearing epidemic proportions, due to an increased number of older Americans, and a greater prevalence of obesity and sedentary lifestyles (Hoffman, 34-49). Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Diabetes is the leading cause of death. It is the leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness, and non-traumatic amputations. People who have diabetes are two to four times more likely to have a heart attack or a stroke. Life expectancy of people who have this disease, on the average is fifteen years, less than that of people who do not have the disease. It is also the leading cause of nerve damage (Hoffman, 34-49). Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã IDDM can cause problems that should be prepared for. The three key problems: Hyp... ...r and neurological diseases. Chronic hyperglycemia activates a metabolic reaction cascade that leads to cellular damage in small to medium blood vessels and peripheral nerves. Nerve damage is the most common complication of diabetes mellitus, and can lead to impotence, incontinence, and loss of sensation from affected areas (Saladin, 656). Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The last effect makes a patient dangerously unaware of major injuries, which can fester from neglect and contribute to gangrene and the necessity of amputation. Many diabetics lose their toes, feet, or legs to the disease. The cardiovascular effects include degeneration of the small arteries of the retina and the kidneys, leading to blindness and kidney failure as common complications. People with type I diabetes are more likely to die of kidney failure than those with type II diabetes. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Diabetes also promotes atherocslerosis, the blockage of blood vessels with fatty deposits, causing poor circulation. In type II diabetes, the most common cause of death is heart failure stemming from atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. Atherosclerosis also contributes to renal failure and gangrene.

BIOLOGY ESSAY Discuss the role of Human transplants in society There are many types of organs in our body. Each organ has their own function and they are important. If an organ is damaged or diseased, without medical help, a person could die. The cornea is very special and is an important part of human body. It helps to protect the rest of the eye from germs, dust, and other harmful matter. The cornea acts as the eyeÃ¢â¬â¢s outermost lens. It functions like a window that controls and focuses the entry of light into the eye. The cornea also serves as a filter, screening out some of the mist damaging ultraviolet wavelengths in sunlight.Without this protection, the lens and the retina would be highly susceptible to injury from ultraviolet radiation. (SOLL EYE) A cornea transplant is a surgical procedure to replace part of the cornea with corneal tissue from a deceased donor. Cornea transplant apply for people who have vision problem caused by thinning of the cornea, severe infections or injuries to scarring of the cornea or vision loss caused by cloudiness of the cornea. The method of cornea surgery is complex. Sometimes, the body rejects the transplant tissue. This occurs in a small number of patients (The New York Times).It occurs in about one out of three patients in the first five years (Medline Plus). According to Alabama Eye Bank, more than 90% of cornea transplant operations successfully restore the recipientÃ¢â¬â¢s vision. Other dangers for a corneal transplant are bleeding, infection of the eye, Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye than can cause vision loss) and swelling of the front of the eye (Medline Plus). Certainly, the medical provider would take every possible precaution to prevent such complications because it can permanently damage the eyes.The surgery consists of the removal of a circular piece of the affected cornea and replacing it with a piece of donor cornea of exactly the same size or shape. It is sewn into place with very fine stitches. Eyes are never removed or replaced during the operation. The body can reject the new cornea sometimes and this is a very negative result of this surgery. 3% to 5% people get scarred and swollen in their eyes after the surgery according to Dr. Paul Driver. However, there are still some positive about the corneal surgery. It mproves peopleÃ¢â¬â¢s vision and has a positive impact on their social and educational development (SOLL EYE). There are many benefits for patients who receive a cornea transplant. The recovery time of corneal transplant is faster than other transplants. People who get the transplant can leave the hospital in a day. With almost all the other surgeries and other transplants, they require people to be hospitalized. Also, the success probability of cornea transplant is higher than other surgeries and patients enjoy good vision for many years (Winchester Hospital). Although the transplant has many benefits, it also has some limitations.In some cases, the body rejec ts the new cornea. Recognizing the warning signs of problems is the best way to prevent corneal transplant rejection. Those symptoms are redness, pain, sensitive to light and decreased vision that last more than 12 hours (Cleveland Clinic). Also, cornea infections are still be a problem that science is trying to prevent. Eye drops are used to prevent infection but also prevent rejection. Rejection can be stopped in most cases, especially if it is diagnosed and treated timely. If treatment fails, another transplant will be needed.However, it is more difficult and the chances of success are not as good as with the first transplant (net doctor). And still, there are cases when a donor cornea cannot be found to use in the transplant, because the donors are not available. In Europe, an Opt-out approach has the greatest impact on the number of preventable deaths that occur because of the lack of donated organs. This approach requires each individual to make a minor action in declaring his or her desire to refrain from donating according to Opt-out laws. Family do not involve in this, it would not make any changes unless that person say no to donation.In the United States, the system is the opposite of Opt-out, and it is called Opt-In. Many states find a way to encourage the donations to be made by allowing the agreement to be noted on the driverÃ¢â¬â¢s license. Donor signs up for an individualÃ¢â¬â¢s wish to be a donor. Individual people have to say yes to be a donor. This means the number of donors starts from a small number. It is a pure consent system rather than an extended opt-out system. (NHSBT) There are more than 10 million people waiting for corneas but there are less people contribute corneas (Sight Life).Some people donÃ¢â¬â¢t want to contribute it because of their religious beliefs make them think they cannot contribute anything on their body after death. Most people think that dead people do not need their organs anymore; they should give them to someone who does and prefer an Opt-out approach. The cornea transplant costs a lot of money. According to Eye Surgery Center, it costs 7500 to 10000 dollars to get a cornea transplant. This expensive price also can be a problem. Some poor people cannot get the transplant because they do not have enough money. The situation can cause people to commit robbery.Even some people kidnap because of this expensive operation prices. For example, on NTD Television in China on Aug. 1, 2012, there was a report about a Korean couple that visited China and the woman was kidnapped. After few days, the woman was found dead with all of her organs removed. This kind of situation is a very serious problem. People commit crimes because of this expensive price that they cannot afford it. Over 111000 people need organ transplants. Thousands of people die each year before a transplant can be located and people have to wait for a long time.Increasing the number of donors would help end the needless sufferi ng and would save lives. I know itÃ¢â¬â¢s hard to think about what are going to happen to your body after you die, but being an organ donor is a generous and worthwhile decision that can be a lifesaver. Career and Technical Education programs, known in the profession simply as CTE, provide students an opportunity to prepare for a wide range of careers. Students are exposed many disciplines including health care, agriculture, business, and graphic design. Through these programs students get to explore various career paths and get hands on training, which will help them to be more employable as they transition into the workforce. Holland (2013) notes that, Ã¢â¬Å"Despite stubbornly high unemployment, many employers complain that they canÃ¢â¬â¢t find qualified candidates.
